How is SMP calculated? #

1. The system uses the statutory Relevant period (RP) to calculate weekly AWE (Average Weekly Earnings) – this is shown on the payslip.
2. SMP is paid at 90% of that weekly rate or the Statutory maternity pay rate, whichever is higher for 6 weeks.
3. It is paid per day (1/7th of the weekly amount)
4. After 6 weeks it reduces to the Statutory maternity pay rate for the next 33 weeks
